What is your name and role at AECOM?

My name is Shi Yik, and I am a Graduate Engineer at AECOM. In this role, I focus on engineering design and building my analytic and design skills under the supervision of experienced engineers.

How long have you worked for AECOM?

I have been with AECOM for nearly a year and a half. This period has been filled with valuable learning experiences and contributions to various engineering projects.

Describe your role and day-to-day work.

As a Graduate Engineer, my day-to-day tasks include conducting engineering designs, building my analytic and design skills, and creating detailed designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, and final working drawings under the guidance of experienced engineers. I also collect and analyze data, use computer software for solving engineering problems, and ensure that our work adheres to budget and schedule constraints while addressing any technical issues raised by clients.

How has your work at AECOM contributed towards having a positive impact on the environment?

In my role, I contribute to the MRT project’s design and execution, which includes adhering to environmental regulations and sustainability practices. By ensuring our designs are efficient and environmentally compliant, we help minimize the ecological footprint of the project, promoting sustainable urban development.

Thinking about the projects you are involved in – what impact have you had to improve social outcomes for communities?

I am currently involved in the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) development project in Bangkok, Thailand, while working from our office in Malaysia. This project is crucial for enhancing public transportation in Bangkok, aiming to improve accessibility and reduce travel time for commuters. My role helps ensure that we deliver our submissions on time and resolve any technical issues, contributing to the successful and timely development of a transportation system that will greatly benefit the community.

Do you have any interesting experience around collaboration, multi dis work, and thinking and acting globally at AECOM?

One interesting experience was attending the Asia Pacific Rail 2024 conference. This event allowed me to meet and network with industry professionals from across the region, gaining insights into various practices and innovations. Additionally, working on the MRT project in Bangkok while being based in Malaysia required collaboration across borders and disciplines, enhancing my global perspective on engineering solutions

Are there any other interesting or unique opportunities you have had through your work at AECOM? Or interesting experiences with clients or building client relationships?

I had the unique opportunity to work abroad at our Thailand office for two months as part of the MRT project. During this time, I also had the chance to meet and bond with AECOM’s leaders. This experience was invaluable for my professional growth and allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the company’s strategic vision and build stronger relationships within the team.

How has AECOM helped you in your career development?

AECOM has supported my career development through hands-on project experience, access to mentorship, and opportunities to participate in industry conferences. The exposure to complex projects like the MRT development and the chance to work internationally have significantly advanced my skills and professional growth.

What’s your proudest moment at AECOM?

My proudest moment at AECOM was working on the Mass Rapid Transit project in Bangkok and being part of the team that successfully managed tight deadlines and complex technical challenges. Additionally, the opportunity to work in Thailand and connect with senior leaders was a significant milestone that highlighted the collaborative and supportive culture at AECOM.
