Jee Yi Yng (YY), Managing Director for Singapore, demonstrated her leadership and advocacy in engineering through her involvement in two key events in September 2024.
On September 12-13, YY chaired the Symposium of Innovation and Challenges in Asian Tunnelling (SICAT) 2024 on behalf of the Tunnelling and Underground Construction Society of Singapore (TUCSS). Later, on September 25, she shared her experiences as a speaker at the CDE Women Symposium 2024: Innovating for the Future, held at the National University of Singapore.
At SICAT 2024, YY led discussions that brought together professionals from across Asia to share technical expertise on tunnelling and underground construction. The symposium featured 16 presentations from nine countries, providing diverse insights into tunnelling practices and innovations that could be adapted locally. The event emphasized the importance of knowledge exchange in tackling challenges and advancing tunnelling solutions in the region.
At the CDE Women Symposium 2024, YY shifted focus to the contributions of women in engineering. Drawing from her own career, she shared how various stages of womanhood influenced her decision-making and career trajectory. She highlighted challenges such as balancing personal and professional demands and addressing biases in male-dominated fields like engineering. She emphasized resilience, adaptability and continuous learning as essential traits for overcoming these hurdles.
YY also spoke about the importance of networking, skill development and fostering confidence among women. She advocated for flexible organizational support and urged universities to promote leadership and diversity in engineering. Her message to young women entering the profession was clear: “Believe in your capabilities and view challenges as opportunities for growth.”
YY’s participation in these events highlights her focus on driving innovation in engineering while advocating for greater diversity and inclusion. Her leadership in tunnelling and her efforts to support women in engineering showcase her commitment to creating a more equitable and forward-thinking industry.
