AECOM has been engaged by Public Works Authority under design and building contract to undertake Master Planning, building design services and design the roads and infrastructure networks. Scope is inclusive of Concept, Schematic, Detail design and construction support for Abu Samra Land Border project.
Located in the southwest of Qatar, the project is a critical infrastructure initiative that forms the land border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Developed to promote regional mobility, tourism and trade as an essential part of Qatar’s continued economic growth. The project involved upgrading existing facilities and constructing new structures to enhance capacity for Qatar’s Customs and Border Protection, Immigration, Emigration and other governmental authorities.
Developmental phases
The project was developed in two phases: ultimate and tournament, which proceeded in parallel. The expansion included improved road networks and traffic circulation planning for cars, buses and trucks, ensuring smooth movement through designated checkpoints, quarantine areas and processing lanes based on vehicle type.
For cars, traffic circulation plans are prepared for regular movements and path followed by vehicles during a discrepancy and based on outcome they will divert to Qatar or return to Saudi Arabia.
For buses, plans are prepared for regular movements and to accommodate for the huge tourists transfer between the two counties during FIFA 2022, separate bus circulation plans are prepared.
For trucks, plans are prepared for regular movements and path followed by vehicles during a discrepancy and based on the outcome they can be diverted to quarantine or to Qatar and in extreme circumstances, back to Saudi Arabia.
The expansion of the road network enabled the smooth flow of traffic between all services within the facility. While it will serve the incoming and outgoing flows, it directs incoming cars, buses and trucks to necessary check points, certain lines or parking.
Recognition
The project was recognized as the ‘Transport Project of the Year’ at the MEED Best Global Projects Awards 2023 for its role in enhancing regional connectivity and border efficiency. AECOM is proud to have partnered with local stakeholders to bring this essential project to execution, setting a new standard for future developments in the region.
