AECOM to deliver depot and sidings feasibility study for Transport for London’s Bakerloo Line Upgrade

News

The appointment serves as one of the first steps towards the rollout of a new fleet of trains on the Bakerloo line, replacing the existing fleet which currently operates with trains that are more than 50 years old

LONDON (August 5, 2026) — AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, has been appointed by Transport for London (TfL) to deliver a feasibility study for the depots and sidings required to facilitate the Bakerloo Line Upgrade (BLU). This marks one of the next steps of feasibility, planning and optioneering to enable the introduction of new rolling stock on the Bakerloo line, replacing the existing fleet that was first brought into service in 1972 – the oldest in daily passenger operation across the UK – and supports long-term improvements in reliability and passenger experience on the line.

Shadi Shekarrizi, Rail Director for London and the South East at AECOM, said: “This is a significant milestone in the Bakerloo Line Upgrade programme and the next step towards improving efficiency, capacity and connectivity across the line. AECOM’s appointment is testament to our history of successful delivery of complex, multi-disciplinary programmes across the rail sector. It allows us to bring together planning, engineering and digital capability from the outset to help shape practical, future-ready solutions for depots and sidings that are essential to enabling new rolling stock and improving long-term performance on the line.”

As lead consultant for the early-stage feasibility and planning works, AECOM, supported by Arcadis, will lead multidisciplinary delivery across planning, systems engineering, rail disciplines, environmental services, digital delivery and BIM integration, culminating in a coordinated baseline design across Stonebridge Park Depot, the Queen’s Park area and London Road (Elephant & Castle) sidings.

This appointment builds on both AECOM and Arcadis’ long-standing partnership as construction advisers and engineering partners on the DLR Beckton Depot Upgrade, as part of the DLR Rolling Stock Replacement programme, intended to bolster the line’s capacity.

Previously, AECOM was selected, alongside WW+P Architects, to provide design services on four new London Underground stations as part of the proposed Bakerloo Line Extension (BLE), aimed at extending the line further into South East London. AECOM was also appointed as lead designer on the first stage of TfL’s Elephant & Castle Station Capacity Upgrade last year.
