Guangzhou Baiyun Airport’s T3 Terminal creates a new gateway for one of China’s busiest aviation hubs. Drawing on Guangzhou’s identity as the “City of Flowers,” it blends gardens, ecological design and cultural storytelling, bringing nature into the passenger experience.

Key highlights

Total area of immersive airside ecological garden landscapes inspired by Lingnan ecology.

The first landside panoramic aviation observation deck and largest original ecological airport garden.

The challenge

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport required more than a functional terminal. The challenge was to create a distinctive landscape identity that connects travelers to the region’s ecology, culture and global outlook. Delivering an immersive passenger experience across the terminal’s expansive footprint required close coordination between landscape, architecture and engineering teams within an ambitious delivery program.

Our solution

AECOM led the landscape design, drawing on Lingnan landscapes, regional ecology and Guangzhou’s trading heritage. Two signature gardens interpret local mountain and water systems, while planting, water features and interactive installations extend the experience throughout the terminal. Multidisciplinary collaboration delivered an integrated landscape vision supporting wellbeing, exploration and cultural discovery.

Key capabilities

Enhancing the passenger journey through landscape-led experiences at a major international aviation gateway

Creating seamless connections between terminal architecture, landscape and passenger experience.

Integrating nature, culture and mobility through immersive landscape environments.

Outcome

Guangzhou Baiyun Airport’s T3 Terminal establishes a new world-class gateway for one of China’s leading aviation hubs. The landscape creates memorable points of arrival, rest and discovery, transforming how travelers experience the airport. As a contemporary expression of regional identity, it strengthens Guangzhou’s position as an international center for commerce, tourism and exchange.
