AECOM Global Water Chief Executive Beverley Stinson was recently in an interview with Malaysia-based e-magazine Asian Water about AECOM’s mission of providing a better future through infrastructure, particularly on water security and resilience in the Asia Pacific region.
In the interview, Beverley highlighted AECOM’s role in major water infrastructure projects across Asia, such as the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant and Deep Tunnel Sewerage System in Singapore. These projects are aiding the Public Utilities Board, Singapore’s National Water Agency, in creating a sustainable water supply and freeing-up residential land space for future use, among other benefits.
For Hong Kong, AECOM is working on the relocation of the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to caverns from the waterfront. This will open more space for mixed dwelling and commercial development, as well as provide improved air treatment and water quality, out of sight from the community.
Beverley also discussed coastal resilience and AECOM’s nature-based solutions for protecting coastal areas in Asia against flooding and storm surges. This similar approach is now being adopted in other cities such as New York, where we have put submerged or hidden seawalls within parklands.
As Beverley noted, Asian countries are leading the sustainable development in water sustainability and resilience. These align with our hope of providing infrastructure and solutions that sustain the planet and provide a better quality of life for all.
