AECOM is proud to help keep America flying

Scroll

AECOM has partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 40+ years to keep America flying.

We have completed more than $100B in airport projects worldwide.

We have worked on more than 1 million linear feet of built runways.

We have designed, constructed, and/or managed 20+ air traffic control towers.

AECOM is an industry leader that consistently earns top ENR rankings in the following categories:

Teterboro Airport Air Traffic Control Tower

Working with Walsh Construction, AECOM delivered the FAA’s first Eastern Service design-build tower project with a new 170-ft tall intermediate level ATCT and a two-story administrative building at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.

To expedite construction and provide reviewable documents for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, design drawings and specifications were split into seven constructible packages.

Tucson International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower

AECOM provided design services for this 252-ft intermediate activity ATCT and 13,000-sf administrative base building.

For the ATCT, the structural design team incorporated the FAA’s request to deviate from the 12 cab column prototype and instead utilized a four cab column design basis.

Photovoltaic solar panels generate much of the Tucson ATCT facilities’ power

The facility achieved a LEED Silver certification with energy-saving features including a 1,600-panel, 500-kilowatt photovoltaic solar array that generates much of the facilities’ power. The design team also incorporated a light-colored roof that reflects the sun’s heat, insulated windows, motion detectors for low-energy indoor lights, and low-water native desert plants.

Charleston Air Surveillance Radar (ASR)

Provided A/E professional design services for a new structure on the USAF Joint Base Charleston at the Charleston International Airport to replace the existing ASR-9 system. The project included construction of an 110-ft-tall steel framed tower and support building to house the ASR equipment. The project also included site grading, new access road, 13,000 LF of new fiber duct bank and 22,000 LF of cable.

Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) Program

Providing technical expertise in airfield design, construction, airport planning, airport operations, runway safety and geographic information systems (GIS) to interpret and categorize all runway incursions and surface incidents at 657 airports, including 527 towered and 130 non-towered locations that are related to FAA’s hot spot (HS) polygons depicted in airport diagrams. AECOM also maintains the FAA’s RIM Program Geodatabase.

Albany International Airport NAVAIDs

AECOM provided airfield electrical and NAVAID design at Albany International Airport in New York. Work included lighting, guidance signage, and the installation of a new Cat II Runway localizer and Runway 19 MALSR.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Lighting Upgrades

AECOM provided design services at the HJA International Airport in Georgia for the approach lighting system on Runway 26R.

Chicago TRACON Modernization

AECOM delivered electrical and mechanical upgrades to 112,650 sf of terminal radar approach control (TRACON) facilities in Chicago, Illinois.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower

AECOM provided A/E design and construction support services for this 370-ft-tall ATCT, and a single-story, 42,000 TRACON base building.

Located in North Carolina, the ATCT is the second largest of its kind in the National Airspace System and it’s the first to incorporate two elevators, which are each located at opposite ends of the tower. This creates a unique oval shape to the shaft that flares into its upper-level round structure.

The facilities achieved the FAA’s High Performance Sustainability Guidelines for Federal Buildings.

San Juan International Airport Tower Doppler Weather Radar

AECOM provided A/E services for the replacement and facility improvements of this terminal doppler weather radar site in Puerto Rico. Extensive coating procedures were implemented to withstand the region’s corrosive humidity and coastal influence.

Work was done to ensure the remaining (existing) facilities and air traffic operations remain undisturbed throughout demolition and construction.

Tampa International Airport Environmental Services

AECOM performed an Environmental Assessment and three Environmental Due Diligence Audits at Tampa International Airport in Florida.

Dayton International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower

AECOM provided preliminary and final design, construction docs, and construction phase services for this 225-ft ATCT in Dayton, Ohio, that houses 17 levels and soars 150 feet taller than its predecessor. Work also included a 10,700-sf administrative base building.

The Dayton ATCT cab with its column-free viewing angles

We coordinated with the FAA and Dayton Airport Authority to create an iconic design that showcases a diamond-patterned steel structure veiled in a glass skin. The cab was also constructed to provide column-free viewing angles for its air traffic controllers.

The facility achieved the FAA’s High Performance Sustainability Guidelines for Federal Buildings.

The project was also recognized with an Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA).

William J. Hughes Technical Center

AECOM is providing A/E services for an estimated 30+ facilities design projects at this major FAA technical center based in New Jersey.

Madison VORTAC

AECOM provided civil, structural, electrical and mechanical design, and construction services for the Madison VORTAC which services the airport in Jackson, Mississippi. It is the tallest structure of its kind with the largest diameter in the Southeastern U.S., standing 90 feet tall with a 150-ft diameter. The project includes the counterpoise structure and a separate TACAN tower structure.

Memphis International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower

AECOM provided design services for this 336-ft tall major activity tower with its 850-sf cab and two-story, 24,850-sf TRACON.

Located in a high seismic zone in Tennessee, the ATCT demonstrates critical durability. The TRACON building is constructed of 100% cast-in-place reinforced concrete and the bottom floor was designed underground for blast hardening considerations.
