Singapore’s national water agency, Public Utility Board (PUB), marked the successful completion of the tunnelling works for the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) Phase 2. With a ceremony held August 21, 2023, we celebrate this milestone with our client in building a more water-resilient Singapore.

The DTSS Phase 2 project ushers in a sustainable solution for used water management, involving the construction of a 98-kilometer network of deep tunnels to convey used water from homes and industries to the upcoming Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) via gravity, eliminating the need for energy-intensive pumping stations.

AECOM, along with joint venture partner Black & Veatch, was appointed as the professional engineering services consultant overseeing the development, engineering, and construction of DTSS Phase 2, which covers the Western and Southern parts of Singapore.

During the milestone event, the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, delivered a speech thanking more than 5,000 workers who have been involved with second phase of the DTSS starting 2019. She also shared how the pioneering construction methods and smart technologies used by five different contractors throughout the project greatly reduced the disruption to the infrastructure above ground and to the public.

Set for completion in 2026, DTSS will boost water recycling and contribute significantly to strengthening water resilience in water-scarce Singapore.
