Jingyi

Assistant Environmental Consultant

Shanghai

What is your name and role at AECOM?

My name is Jingyi Wan (Yvonne), and I am an Assistant Environmental Consultant in AECOM’s SAR team in Shanghai.

How long have you worked for AECOM?

This is my first full-time job with AECOM, starting in July 2024 after I graduated. I’ve been with this lovely family for about two months now.

Describe your role and day-to-day work?

As an Assistant Environmental Consultant, I am primarily engaged in site assessments of soil and groundwater, as well as report writing. Fieldwork mainly includes soil drilling and groundwater monitoring.

Thinking about the projects you are involved in – what impact have you had to improve social outcomes for communities?

Since starting my career, the most memorable project I have been involved in is the Detailed Soil and Groundwater Investigation Project for a plant of Signify N.V. (a Dutch multinational lighting corporation) in Yangzhou, Jiangsu. This project focuses on assessing the potential environmental liability by identifying and monitoring contaminants of concern in soil and groundwater. It positively impacts society by determining the extent of contamination and groundwater flow direction through quantitative analysis of pollutants and groundwater recharge rates, thereby mitigating or preventing the uncontrolled spread of these contaminants.

How has your work at AECOM contributed towards having a positive impact on the environment?

As a member of the Environmental Department, making a positive impact on the environment is my primary objective. My team primarily works on assessing the environmental impact of soil and groundwater at client sites and providing subsequent remediation solutions, thereby enhancing environmental sustainability.

Do you have any interesting experience around collaboration, multi dis work, and thinking and acting globally at AECOM?

In my view, AECOM is a global enterprise. One of the most interesting experiences is the opportunity to work with colleagues from different countries, providing diverse solutions to the same professional issues. Additionally, the company’s networking platforms allow me to seek advice from international colleagues on professional challenges encountered in my work. This mode of working has facilitated a seamless transition from academia to the professional world.

Are there any other interesting or unique opportunities you have had through your work at AECOM? Or interesting experiences with clients or building client relationships?

The Signify’s Detailed Soil and Groundwater Investigation Project is the largest project I have participated in since joining AECOM. The scope of this project has allowed me to gain a deeper and faster understanding of my role. It has positively influenced my subsequent work, translating theoretical knowledge from textbooks into practical experience and contributing to my valuable professional development.

How has AECOM helped you in your career development?

AECOM’s professional and efficient working model has enabled me to establish short-term career goals within just two months. The meticulous work attitude and high professional standards of my colleagues have motivated me to continuously refine my shortcomings and enhance my professional skills. Furthermore, AECOM provides a wealth of learning resources and a comprehensive promotion pathway for employees, encouraging us to continuously push our boundaries and realize our potential.

What’s your proudest moment at AECOM?

During my two months at AECOM, the accomplishment I am most proud of is completing my first site survey and report. Although the project was relatively simple, it holds significant personal meaning for me.
