Shenzhen

What is your name and role at AECOM?

My name is Yueqi Zhang, and I am a graduate urban designer in AECOM’s MP team in Shenzhen.

How long have you worked for AECOM?

I started working at AECOM in January 2024 and this has been my eighth months here.

Describe your role and day-to-day work?

My daily work focuses a lot on creating and implementing comprehensive plans that integrate sustainable and innovative design principles into urban development projects. My day-to-day work involves coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, conducting analysis, and developing strategic visions that guide the planning process. As an assistant urban designer, lots of my work follows the framework built by senior colleagues, but I’m also able to develop my own ideas and integrate them into the projects. This collaborative approach allows me to contribute to shaping liveable, resilient, and culturally enriched urban environments.

Thinking about the projects you are involved in – what impact have you had to improve social outcomes for communities?

My work has consistently focused on improving social outcomes by designing inclusive and accessible urban spaces. Recently, I participated in a consultation project centred on the management and operation of urban public spaces at Xi’li Railway Station in Shenzhen. This project explored the possibility of mixing public and private sectors and promoting social cohesion, and economic opportunities for all residents, hence foster social interaction and community engagement. The holistic approach ensures that the project not only meet technical and aesthetic goals but also positively impact the communities we serve.

How has your work at AECOM contributed towards having a positive impact on the environment?

At AECOM, my focus on sustainable urban design has significantly contributed to positive environmental impacts. I have been involved in a landscape planning project at Shenzhen, Pingshan, in which we focused on integrating natural with urban spaces, aiming to create a harmonious balance between city life and greenery. In this project we ensured that the urban environment coexists with nature, fostering biodiversity and improving air quality. This approach not only enhances the city’s aesthetic appeal but also promotes environmental sustainability, offering residents a healthier, more vibrant living space that connects them with nature.

Do you have any interesting experience around collaboration, multi dis work, and thinking and acting globally at AECOM?

Multidisciplinary work is one of the most exciting aspects of working at AECOM, as it allows me to connect with professionals from diverse fields and absorb different ideas from various perspectives. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with teams from Economics, Sustainability, and Transportation in both Shanghai and Hong Kong, which has provided me with valuable new insights.

Are there any other interesting or unique opportunities you have had through your work at AECOM? Or interesting experiences with clients or building client relationships?

One particularly unique opportunity I’ve had at AECOM was the chance to collaborate closely with a colleague from our Shanghai office, who was on exchange from the Sustainability team. Her expertise in sustainable design challenged us to think differently, and we explored innovative ways to integrate environmental considerations into our urban planning initiatives. This experience not only broadened my understanding of sustainability but also strengthened my ability to work cross-functionally, reinforcing the importance of global collaboration in delivering impactful solutions.

How has AECOM helped you in your career development?

As the first full-time job in my life, AECOM has been instrumental in my career development by providing a platform for continuous learning and growth. Through its diverse project portfolio, I’ve been able to expand my expertise across various aspects of urban planning, from sustainable design to community engagement. Additionally, all my colleagues and leaders provided generous help at the beginning of my career. The open and positive vibe in our team gave me great confidence of continuing my career as a designer.

What’s your proudest moment at AECOM?

There are such a lot of proud moments since my team is so supportive and gives me so much recognition. If I must choose one, then I would say the moment that our efforts are acknowledged by the clients.
