Press Release

June 30, 2014

AECOM announced today the completion of several tasks associated with the opening of the Calgary Airport Authority’s (YYC’s) new runway — the longest in Canada — for which AECOM served as project manager.

News

The authority’s Runway Development Project (RDP), a civil effort with a budget of US$565 million (C$620 million), established the new, 14,000-foot parallel runway with a Category IIIa Instrument Landing System, a taxiway system that includes high-speed exits, underpass structures at Taxiway R and Taxiway J, airfield lighting, controls and a new Field Electric Center.

AECOM and sub-consultant Hatch Mott MacDonald provided project management services directly to the Calgary Airport Authority for the RDP.  AECOM’s team comprised management, finance, schedule, administration, design management and quality assurance professionals.  In addition to serving as project manager, working with the authority, the AECOM team completed a comprehensive environmental assessment consistent with the Canadian Environmental Act requirements; provided quality and assurance materials testing services during construction; completed preliminary design; and provided project coordination for independent projects associated with the construction of a new air traffic control tower.

“AECOM is proud to be not only a member of the local Calgary community, but also a team member with YYC,” said Loren Smith, AECOM’s aviation executive vice president and global market sector leader.  “The robust economy in Alberta has fueled remarkable growth in passenger traffic, and we are pleased to be able to help YYC meet that rising demand.”

“Being a part of completing YYC’s new Runway 17L-35R is a major achievement and one we are very proud of — it’s the result of teamwork throughout every stage of the project,” said Marty Shenfield, AECOM’s project manager.

The RDP is part of YYC’s Airport Development Program, which, along with the International Facilities Project (IFP), is the largest expansion the airport has ever undertaken.  The IFP, for which AECOM also serves as project manager, is a major terminal expansion that is projected to double the size of the existing terminal.
