DALLAS (August 31, 2026) — AECOM (NYSE:ACM), the trusted global infrastructure leader, today announced its appointment as design partner for the Warkworth to Te Hana project in New Zealand, partnering with ACCIONA as the lead contractor. ACCIONA, alongside its partner Aberdeen Investments, comprises the Northway Consortium. The project forms Section One of three nationally significant roads along the broader Northland Corridor Program, a new 100-kilometer motorway connecting Auckland to Whangārei. Once complete, the project will upgrade the existing State Highway 1 into a higher-standard, safe and more resilient motorway.
“The Northland Corridor is a transformational investment that will improve safety, resilience and connectivity across the upper North Island,” said Mark McManamny, AECOM’s Chief Executive of Australia and New Zealand. “We have brought together some of the industry’s leading transportation, engineering and design specialists from across New Zealand, Australia and our global business to support delivery of this nationally significant project. Combined with the expertise of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, ACCIONA and our design partners, this gives us an outstanding platform to deliver infrastructure that will enhance how people and freight move, support economic growth and create lasting benefits for Northland communities.”
AECOM’s design solution addresses key safety challenges for current road users through a new system interchange, an optimized alignment that improves curves and sight distances, and safer gradients. The alignment also enhances resilience by reducing impacts from flooding, landslides and other extreme weather events. The new road will improve travel times for cars, freight and public transport, easing congestion and helping the growing Northland community stay better connected to Auckland, New Zealand’s economic hub.
“Our selection reinforces our reputation as a trusted leader in the transportation engineering services,” said Russell Jackson, interim chief executive of AECOM’s global Transportation business. “This 100-kilometer project is a transformative investment in New Zealand’s transportation infrastructure and economic growth. AECOM brings proven value and global expertise to megaprojects such as these, and we look forward to partnering with ACCIONA to enhance infrastructure and deliver sustainable, future-ready transport solutions.”
AECOM’s design solution reuses on-site materials, reducing the need for imported materials and minimizing waste. This will lower haulage and embodied carbon, delivering cost efficiencies while supporting sustainability goals and reducing environmental impact.
