AECOM to help Singapore build “smart” communities

News

Generic View of HDB Estate at Ang Mo Kio ESINGAPORE (July 18, 2016) — AECOM, as part of a consortium led by NCS and consisting of Arup Singapore and Samsung SDS Asia Pacific, has been selected by Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) to deliver a “Smart Urban Habitat Masterplan” (SUHMP) that will help guide the future evolution of HDB’s new towns in Singapore.

These large-scale public housing communities, which collectively are home to more than 4 out of 5 Singaporeans, represent Singapore’s unique solution to delivering high-quality, safe and affordable communities for the nation’s diverse population. The planning and design of HDB towns has evolved over 50+ years and shows Singapore’s commitment to long-term planning and continuous improvement. The SUHMP is the next step in that journey and is part of a larger vision to make Singapore a “Smart Nation,” one that seizes the opportunities offered by advances in technology to enhance the way Singaporeans live, work, play and interact.

Brian Jennett and Robert Shwed, Directors in AECOM’s Design, Planning & Economics group in Singapore, represented the company at the launch ceremony for this significant project. According to Mr. Jennett, “The SUHMP is part of a broader evolution in the field of urban planning, an area where Singapore is already a leader.” Noted Mr. Shwed, “The SUHMP is also part of a larger vision to make Singapore a ‘Smart Nation.’ It will be transformational.”

Speaking against the backdrop of Singapore International Water Week, for which AECOM is a Founding Sponsor, and the concurrent World Cities Summit, Mr. Sean Chiao, AECOM Asia-Pacific President said, “Creating smarter cities for the future is a focus for AECOM, particularly in this part of the world. Asia is home to some of the world’s largest and newest cities, and we aim to meet their evolving needs.”

AECOM provides global expertise and local experience in many fields relevant to the “Smart City” concept: master planning, economics and business planning, urban and landscape design, transportation and infrastructure planning, and building engineering.

The consortium for this project will help HDB identify and plan for the implementation of a suite of state-of-the-art, technology-enabled solutions that will make HDB’s towns more liveable, safe and empowering; more efficient to build, operate and maintain; and more sustainable and resilient in the face of an ever-changing environment.
