A rapid development model helped VIP Rail Alberta Midland target their investment amid shifting market conditions to create one of the largest rail facilities in Western Canada.
Delivering rail infrastructure solutions to support growing freight demands
Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is one of Canada’s largest industrial regions and a leading hub for oil & gas, critical minerals, and advanced manufacturing. The lack of railcar storage and transload options left freight rail haulers and producers facing potential shipping delays, Class I Railway demurrage charges, and costly long-haul trucking options.
VIP Rail Alberta Midland (formerly Alberta Midland Railway Terminal (AMRT), prior to its acquisition by Alpenglow Rail and rebranding as VIP Rail Alberta Midland) recognized the growing need for railcar storage and transload service to ease congestion and to create more efficient transportation of bulk products to market. What began as a greenfield development in 2013 has grown into one of the largest rail facilities in Western Canada, spanning 300 acres and offering more than 2,000 railcar storage spots, unit-train-capable loop tracks, and expanding bulk-commodity transloading capacity.
Since the beginning, AECOM has collaborated closely with VIP Rail Alberta Midland at every stage, delivering comprehensive services to build a rail terminal serviced by both of Canada’s Class I railways for critical first- and last-mile freight logistics. From concept to construction, AECOM’s railway, geotechnical, environmental, and civil engineering expertise has given VIP Rail Alberta Midland confidence to invest in critical infrastructure amid ever-changing market conditions.
Rapid-Development Project Delivery Maximizes Targeted Investment
To meet shifting commercial priorities and apply investment strategically, AECOM and VIP Rail Alberta Midland used a rapid-development delivery approach. A quick turnaround on a well-defined, targeted scope meant portions of the facility could be up and running sooner than building out a full-scale plan. Each portion of the build needed to be future-ready and adaptable, requiring the combined experience and in-depth knowledge of the teams at VIP Rail Alberta Midland and AECOM. Rapid development frees up capital to build usable portions of the facility while allowing the greatest flexibility to adapt the build to market demand.
Trusting Relationships are the Foundation of Success
An example of the rapid-development approach was the integration of transloading into the facility’s services. We worked closely with the VIP Rail Alberta Midland project managers and planners to implement a phased transload facility that integrated with both the existing and future rail facilities to meet current and emerging market demands. Field-informed design solutions enabled AECOM’s construction supervisor to collaborate with engineers, the contractor and the client for on-the-ground problem-solving when required. This collaborative problem-solving approach to design and construction, grounded in trust, helped VIP Rail meet ambitious project milestones.
AECOM has supported VIP Rail Alberta Midland in undertaking high-pressure, capital-intensive projects that were heavily affected by fluctuating commodity markets. The project’s success would not have been possible without Lamont County’s support. Together, we have overcome challenges, met shifting stakeholder and customer needs, and can look back proudly on the facility’s impact in Western Canada. Today, the rail facility helps solve critical supply chain challenges for many of the region’s leading refining, petrochemical, and manufacturing companies within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.
This project demonstrates the importance of flexibility, communication, and commitment to a shared vision.
