The Bydgoszcz Waste Incineration Plant in Bydgoszcz, Poland is a WtE project, turning rubbish into energy. The project was granted an occupancy permit in November 2015, allowing operation processes to begin. The plant can process 180,000 Mg of municipal waste twenty-four-seven up to 8,000 hours a year. It comprises two complete lines of solid waste incineration. AECOM was appointed as the general designer for the architectural and construction stages of the project. We were responsible for the building’s designs, the executive designs, author’s supervision, as well as securing the necessary permits connected with the development and completion of the project. This investment meets the requirements of the European Union within the scope of the recovery of materials and the reduction of waste storage on landfill sites. Thanks to this investment the local government will meet the requirements for the reduction of biodegradable waste storage and avoid EU penalties, while simultaneously lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the fact that carbon dioxide is released during the incineration process, it is 21 times less toxic than the methane released from landfill waste. It is very important that by the waste utilisation, the plant will be generating heat energy and electric energy in cogeneration allowing for more efficient utilization of fuel. The electricity and heat will be delivered to some tens of thousands of families in the area. The incineration plant is the most modern facility in Poland. It will provide some tens of thousands of families with heat energy and energy. AECOM has been involved in several other developments across the investment in association with WtE plant, including a composting plant, a waste transfer station located in Torun, and a transmission network, which sends out electric energy and heat from WtE plant across all of the infrastructure.
