The Macquarie Point Development Project aims to restore and re-energise a site that has long been associated with industrial, freight and rail use into a significant urban renewal hub for the people of Tasmania, incorporating cultural, public open space, science residential and commercial development
AECOM has been engaged by the Macquarie Point Development Corporation in the role of Project Remediation Consultant to assist with the development, implementation and ongoing oversight of a remediation strategy for the Macquarie Point site.
The Macquarie Point site, largely located on reclaimed land within the Hobart port area, comprises 9.3 hectares. The site and surrounding area have a history of mixed industrial use, including the former Hobart Gasworks, rail freight, and bulk fuel storage.
The Macquarie Point Development Corporation (Corporation) was created by the Tasmanian Government to remediate and develop the site.
The Corporation aims to develop the site for a mixture of uses, including arts, cultural, science, tourism, residential, commercial, with the intention to create an important inner-city arts, science and cultural centre.
As a result of historical activities at the site, contamination is present in both soil and groundwater.
AECOM has undertaken extensive environmental assessment and remedial activities at the site to assist the Corporation with developing it.
Outcomes and Value
Through the work described above, AECOM has been assisting the Corporation with the first-ever statutory audit of a site in Tasmania, and is close to achieving auditor sign-off for the first of seven precincts at the site, which will initiate the first phase of development.
