Discover how we’re helping deliver a 22-kilometre section of the new S5 Expressway which will, once complete, significantly improve connectivity in northwest Poland.
The S5 expressway is one of several major road infrastructure projects currently underway in Poland. Running from Grudziądz through Poznań to Wrocław, the S5 provides a direct link between southwest and northeast Poland.
Appointed by the Polish National Roads Authority (GDDKiA), we are providing construction supervision and management for a 22-kilometre section of the new expressway.
This section, which will run from Dworzysko to Aleksandrowo, will further extend the route into the northwestern region where, until now, there have been no major expressways.
As well as improving connectivity and reducing journey times across Poland, the new S5 is expected to boost tourism and economic growth in the region.
What was AECOM’s role on Poland’s S5 expressway?
As construction manager and supervisor, we have supported the client throughout each stage of the construction process.
This involves ensuring all works comply with the FIDIC Yellow Book – a practical guide developed by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers for design-build construction projects – and Polish construction law.
In addition, we worked with the works contractor to prepare a user-friendly works programme, assessing risk, potential impact and developing remedial actions where necessary.
One challenge on this project was that due to complications with the initial works contractor, our role was extended far beyond the original scope. This meant our team had to rapidly mobilise and coordinate the introduction of the new contractor to ensure a smooth transition.
Our teams are also providing ongoing monitoring throughout the works, plus clear and accurate reporting to the employer.
How will the expressway consider the environment and local communities?
As part of our role, we are supervising the implementation of various environmental protection measures included in the works contract.
From building animal crossings, installing noise-reduction barriers, planting along roadsides for habitat restoration, and designing efficient drainage systems, these will ensure that environmental impact and noise disturbance are kept to a minimum.
Once complete, the S5 expressway will strengthen the existing road network, connecting northwest Poland to the rest of the region.
