AECOM Hunt served as design builder for the San Jose McEnery Convention Center expansion and renovation. This project entailed the demolition of the existing library in order to allow for a new expansion of the ballroom, kitchen and back-of-house support spaces stacked above a combination of fixed and flexible meeting spaces.
The existing convention center was renovated to provide a cohesive look with the new expansion and included refreshed meeting rooms, multi-purpose rooms, an executive ballroom, a remodeled kitchen, new pre-function and exhibit hall finishes, and new signage.
The expansion added 127,500 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a 35,000-square-foot ballroom and 25,000 square feet of meeting rooms, increasing San Jose’s Convention Center space to 550,000 square feet.
Nearly 2,000 tons of steel was used during construction. The new façades truly embrace the surrounding environment of downtown San Jose, maximizing natural elements and bringing daylight to the space, with over 13,500 square feet of glazing. Openings in the glass walls allow the meeting room level to open to the terraced plaza, creating opportunities for indoor/outdoor meetings and light exhibits.
The San Jose McEnery Convention Center received LEED Silver Certification in January 2015.
