Auckland is a city on the move, and as its population grows, the need for efficient, sustainable, and equitable transport solutions becomes ever more critical.
We’re playing a vital role in shaping the future of Auckland’s transport network through Te Ara Hauāuru – Northwest Rapid Transit project. This ambitious undertaking, led by New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) in partnership with mana whenua, the local community, and our joint venture partners Jacobs, Mott McDonald, and Jasmax, will transform the way people connect with the northwest of the city and beyond.
Building connectivity and opportunity
What happens when a growing region lacks well-connected and efficient public transport? A heavy reliance on cars, leading to increased congestion, emissions, and community frustration.
The Northwest Rapid Transit project is not just about building a busway and stations; it’s about creating a vital transport artery that will:
- Stimulate economic growth: residents and businesses will have faster and more reliable access to employment hubs in the city and within the northwest.
- Enhance social equity: people who don’t own a car will be better connected to essential services, education, and social activities. Reliable public transport is a cornerstone of an equitable society.
- Support sustainable growth: sustainable, lower-emission transport options are vital during population growth, not just to free up our congested roads but to reduce carbon emissions.
- Foster vibrant communities: improved connectivity will create a more vibrant and liveable northwest community. People will have greater choice in where they live, work, and play, and quality urban development will be supported.
A collaborative approach
We’re bringing our global expertise in transport planning, engineering, and environmental sustainability to this project. We are working closely with NZTA, Te Kawerau ā Maki, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, other iwi partners, Auckland Council, Auckland Transport, and the wider community.
Successful infrastructure projects are not just about technical excellence; community needs and aspirations must be understood, and responded to.
The name gifted to the project, Te Ara Hauāuru references the winds from the west and represents the powerful voice and vision of the northwestern communities and the path of connection to the heart of Auckland. Those delivering the project deeply respect and integrate cultural values.
Navigating complexity, delivering value
Through the Investment Case phase various transport modes and routes were analysed by demand, cost-effectiveness, environmental and cultural impacts, community value, and integration with the wider transport network. The preferred busway option, similar to the successful Northern Busway, reflects a pragmatic approach that offers:
- Staged delivery: This allows for benefits to be realised sooner for northwest communities. The planned opening of the Westgate bus station in 2026 is a testament to this.
- Flexibility and future-proofing: The busway is a long-term solution that can be upgraded as needed to meet increasing demand.
- Seamless integration: The busway will connect with the existing and planned bus network, both locally and in the city centre.
- Value for money: It is a cost-effective solution that maximises taxpayer benefits.
Building a connected Auckland
The Northwest Rapid Transit project is a crucial piece of Auckland’s evolving rapid transit network.
It will connect seamlessly with other significant projects like the City Rail Link, the Eastern Busway, and the proposed Waitematā Harbour Connections, creating an integrated and resilient transport system for the region.
We’re continuing our work on Te Ara Hauāuru on the upcoming stages.
Investment in the northwest will not only improve daily commutes, but contribute to a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for Auckland. By actively listening to the community, respecting Te Ao Maaori, and applying innovative solutions, we are helping to build a better-connected Auckland for generations to come.
