AECOM, in partnership with CH2M HILL, is providing consulting services to manage the design, construction, and warranty services for the City of Hamilton’s Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade expansion. The existing Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant is a conventional secondary treatment plant with chlorine disinfection and has an average day capacity of 409 ML/d and a peak capacity of 614 ML/d.

The City of Hamilton is currently undertaking the Clean Harbour Project, an ambitious goal with support from the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada to enhance water quality in Hamilton Harbour by upgrading the Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The project involves several sub-projects including replacement of the existing raw wastewater pumping station with a new station, expansion of secondary treatment to allow for nitrification, addition of tertiary cloth filtration media for tertiary treatment, construction of a new Energy Centre complete with standby power and construction of a new chlorine contact tank and outfall to Red Hill Creek.

AECOM is the lead consultant on the following sub-projects:

  • Construction of a new raw wastewater pumping station with a firm capacity of 1,700 ML/d and decommissioning the existing raw wastewater pumping station.
  • Construction of a new chlorine contact tank and outfall to Red Hill Creek designed for the full build-out of 1,000 ML/d.
  • Construction of a new Energy Centre to service both the Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Woodward Avenue Water Treatment Plant. The Centre will be equipped with transformers and 3 standby generators initially with expandable capacity to the full station build-out.

Design and construction of different project components will occur in parallel and all components are anticipated to be completed by 2020.
