State-of-the-art AECOM engineered cancer hospital ready for patients in Liverpool

London (June 16, 2020) – AECOM, the world’s premier infrastructure firm, has engineered a transformational cancer centre in Liverpool.

Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool, which is set to open on 27th June, has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. The AECOM building engineering team has been supporting The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust from the initial design stage through to handover to deliver Liverpool’s first dedicated cancer centre.

AECOM has designed an energy-efficient building through the provision of multi-disciplinary services including building services engineering, civil and structural engineering, acoustic engineering, sustainability, as well as BREEAM and environmental services.

The 11-floor hospital includes 110 individual inpatient bedrooms and will provide highly specialist cancer care such as pioneering immunotherapy, gene therapy and stem cell transplants. There are facilities for bone marrow transplant, diagnostics and imaging, outpatients, day case treatments, a teenage and young adult unit, clinical therapies, and a wide range of cancer information and support.

Through the AECOM design, sustainable solutions have been delivered, such as the high-performance façade. This façade insulates the building while maximising daylight penetration, patient comfort and gives views out across Liverpool. The dynamic control systems help the building perform over 50% better than the Department of Health’s current guideline carbon targets. In addition, more than 30% of the building’s electrical demand is generated on site by low and zero carbon (LZC) systems such as photovoltaic panels.

Modern methods of construction have been used wherever possible, including 30% of the building’s structure comprised of modular components. Prefabrication and modularisation aid in site construction, quality of build, reduce timescales and reduce onsite health and safety risks.

AECOM has worked with the wider delivery team on the project, including architects BDP and contractors Laing O’Rourke.

Richard Mann, Healthcare and Science Sector Leader, UK & Ireland at AECOM, said: “First-class care requires facilities where quality and excellence are the watchwords. The AECOM healthcare sector team and I are extremely proud to play our part in bringing this transformational facility to Liverpool, helping ensure the staff can bring their world class expertise to more patients, who will now receive personalised treatment that is second to none.”

Dr Liz Bishop, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool will benefit people across Cheshire and Merseyside for generations to come, delivering innovative and highly-specialist care to a population with one of the highest rates of cancer nationally. AECOM provided invaluable support on the project, ensuring it achieved excellent ratings for sustainability, carbon emissions and environmental efficiency.”

Fiona Jones, Client Project Director, said: “AECOM have been with us every step of the way from concept design through to building completion. It has been good to work with a consultancy with such strength in depths and expertise in designing highly technical healthcare buildings.”
