Bird Paradise: Award-winning design meets eco-conscious engineering

Bird Paradise, Asia’s largest bird park, has been awarded Design of the Year Award at the President*s Design Award (P*DA) 2025 — Singapore’s top recognition for design excellence.

This award celebrates the park’s holistic approach to habitat design, immersive wildlife experiences, and its strong commitment to nurturing biodiversity through thoughtful, nature-inspired innovation.

Located within the 17-hectare Mandai Wildlife Reserve in Singapore, Bird Paradise is home to over 3,500 birds across 400-plus species. Replacing the iconic Jurong Bird Park, it offers a visitor experience that minimizes disturbance while closely replicating natural habitats.

AECOM served as the landscape architect and civil and structural engineer, delivering comprehensive services including landscape strategies, technical guidance, site supervision, and geotechnical risk management. Our work enabled the recreation of diverse biomes, supported by native planting schemes and sustainable practices developed in collaboration with biodiversity experts.

To enrich the visitor journey, we integrated pathways, viewing decks, and thematic gardens that encourage exploration and connection with nature — all aligned with the park’s ecological and thematic vision.

We also led the structural design of key buildings, including the Penguin Exhibit Building, Amphitheater, Entrance Plaza, and elevated walkways. Notably, structures like the Penguin Exhibit Building were engineered to withstand long-term lateral earth pressure, serving both architectural and structural functions.

Comprehensive geotechnical analyses informed the design of deep foundations and retaining systems, ensuring long-term resilience and safety.

This award celebrates the collaborative efforts of Mandai Wildlife Group, our partners, stakeholders, and dedicated team — united by a shared vision to create spaces where nature and innovation thrive.
