AECOM has won two agriculture contracts, totaling US$30.8 million, for a five-year irrigation and agriculture project in Burkina Faso, a west African country.
In collaboration with African partner businesses, AECOM will provide a range of consulting services to the government of Burkina Faso to improve irrigation systems, spark agricultural production and generate economic growth to help offset rural poverty in the region.
“We are proud to play a key role in supporting the country’s growing population and improving residents’ quality of life,” said John M. Dionisio, AECOM president and chief executive officer.
To improve irrigation systems, AECOM will develop a 5,060-acre irrigation scheme, conduct flood-simulation modeling, rehabilitate a dam to regulate critical reservoir water levels and flow, and provide construction supervision and training services for the operation of the irrigation system in the Sourou Valley. The company will also provide technical assistance for farm production, training for veterinary practitioners and guidance on agroforestry, inland fisheries and best environmental-protection practices in the western region of Burkina Faso.
The economic-growth component of the project will be in partnership with Développement International Desjardins, a major Canadian credit union, and will offer medium- and long-term credit to farmers, small- and medium-size rural businesses and agricultural enterprises. The project is managed by Millennium Challenge Account-Burkina Faso and sponsored by the United States-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation.
