AECOM’s aviation team was the lead designer for Sri Lanka’s second largest international new airport, which is also the first greenfield airport in the country.
To enhance and facilitate the economic and tourism growth in both the Southern and Eastern regions of Sri Lanka, a new greenfield airport was proposed and planned to serve as an alternative air transport link to the country.
AECOM was the lead designer responsible for a design and build contract of this new airport. The project involves developing a new Code F (A380) capable greenfield international airport from feasibility stage through design, construction and commissioning stages.
Under the theme of Eco Airport, the principle design objective of the new airport is to develop a sustainable design compatible with the existing environment and culture within strict cost and program parameters. The design work includes consideration of all aspects of airport development, including future expansion requirements, construction phasing and end user and operational requirements.
In addition, AECOM was responsible to review the master plan as well as provided design services for the airfield and apron layout, pavement, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP), fire and rescue, fuel storage and security systems.
The airport features a 12,000-square-meter passenger terminal which can handle one million passengers per annum, a cargo terminal with an area of 10,000 square meters and a 35-meter-tall air traffic control tower.
