As China experiences one of the most rapid urbanization processes in human history, the country also faces mounting pressure to meet ambitious emission-reduction targets through the building sector. AECOM’s China Building Engineering team responded by delivering a world first: the only project to earn four international green building credentials.
This 400,000-square-meter low-carbon, green demonstration complex is a centerpiece of the Tianjin TEDA Modern Service District (MSD). AECOM was engaged to provide comprehensive engineering services.
Since opening in 2014, the project has achieved an unparalleled milestone: four prestigious green building certifications —
- US LEED Gold
- China Green Building, Three Star
- European BREEAM, Very Good
- Japan CASABEE, Grade S.
No other project worldwide has accomplished this level of recognition.
AECOM’s China Building Engineering team delivered structural, MEP and sustainability services. Our work applied cutting-edge engineering technologies and practical, constructible solutions to minimize carbon footprint and energy use across the building’s life cycle. Key features included:
- Advanced water conservation systems
- Renewable energy integration
- High-performance building envelop design
- Comfortable, efficient indoor environments
- Intelligent building management systems (BMS)
- Green structures and materials
This pioneering project serves not only as a green technology benchmark but also as an educational demonstration site, showcasing sustainable solutions across design, construction, operation and maintenance.
The TEDA MSD further advanced sustainability awareness through public bulletins and forums highlighting the project’s achievements.
Notable innovations included:
- Passive design strategies for year-round natural ventilation
- Double-glazed (low-e) ventilated facade on the southern elevation and double-pane low-e facade on the northern elevation for optimized envelope performance
- High-efficiency, low-carbon MEP systems with underfloor air distribution
- Ground source heat pumps and SCBH15 high-performance transformers
Award:
- MIPIM Asia 2014 Award for Innovative Green Building
