What is your name and role at AECOM?

Lauren Lewis. Apprentice in the Water team.

How long have you worked for AECOM?

4 years. I started in January 2020.

Describe your role and day-to-day work?

I work on a broad range of projects which I really enjoy as there is always something new and different to try. The majority of my work involves flood risk and flood modelling. I build 1D and 2D flood models for rivers and also create models for rainfall drainage systems using a wide range of software. I also use models to evaluate flood risk to help create strategic flood risk assessments for councils that are used to aid planning and development and economic assessments to identify funding opportunities and the options which can be used to mitigate flood risk.

Thinking about the projects you are involved in – what impact have you had to improve social outcomes for communities?

I have been involved in flood alleviation schemes which identify opportunities for flood defences and flood storage to help protect areas from flooding.

How has your work at AECOM contributed towards having a positive impact on the environment?

Climate change is a big part of all projects and has to be factored into our work. This makes you actively think about how to improve your way of thinking and living and encourages you to live more sustainably, even if it is just little things such as following the recycling instructions on packaging.

Do you have any interesting experience around collaboration, multi dis work, and thinking and acting globally at AECOM?

Lots of our projects run across multiple disciplines, for example a project for Alderney Airport required input from the water, aviation, infrastructure and environment teams. This not only broadens your knowledge as you share information with other people but also improves relationships with colleagues around the office that you may not have spoken to otherwise.

Are there any other interesting or unique opportunities you have had through your work at AECOM? Or interesting experiences with clients or building client relationships?

Being part of AECOM throughout my early career has increased my confidence massively. Speaking with clients regularly throughout projects to build relationships is something that I never expected to be involved in so early on in my career but it is extremely beneficial.

How has AECOM helped you in your career development?

AECOM has supported me throughout my degree apprenticeship. I am currently going into my fifth and final year. AECOM factors in assignments and exams into my resourcing to ensure that I am not overwhelmed with studies alongside work. This allows me to complete all work to a high standard without leading to burn out. The industry based experience I am gaining while studying is extremely valuable and allows me to become recognised with a chartered organisation when I graduate. My career plan helps me stay on track with my goals and allows my manager to assign me projects that will allow me to develop and achieve these.
