In a joint venture, AECOM Hunt is serving as construction manager for the Southwest Airlines Fort Lauderdale Airport Terminal 1 Modernization Program. The project scope is comprised of a new five-gate concourse and renovation of the existing Terminal 1, including new landslide facilities, TSA security check points, Federal Inspection Services space, expanded seating areas, and new retail and concession spaces.

The first component in the project is a new five-gate concourse and connector linking new gates to the existing T-1 Terminal. The new concourse will include airfield paving, fueling, and other aircraft support facilities to accommodate the new aircraft gates. This two-story structure will facilitate a new passenger terminal, hold room seating, concessions and retail spaces, and aviation offices.

The second component is an extensive expansion to the existing T-1 Terminal, creating a new gateway to the existing B and C Concourses. This will be accomplished by removing the existing airline offices and building enclosures and installing a new structure spanning 260 feet into the existing terminal spaces while maintaining airline operations. A new four-story structure and exterior enclosure will be constructed in and around the existing and operating T-1 Terminal. The new concourse mezzanine facilitates combining the two existing security checkpoints. In addition, the expansion provides new airline and aviation authority administration spaces, new and upgraded baggage handling equipment, new vertical transportation, and new tenant space for concession and retail opportunities.
