Rebecca Shaw
Senior Electrical Engineer — Transmission and Distribution, Auckland

I really enjoy the diversity of my work; it keeps me interested and challenged – every day is different!
I work in the power systems industry as an Electrical Engineer and have worked for AECOM for nine years since graduating. I studied at the University of Auckland, and achieved a conjoint degree in Electrical Engineering and Arts (majoring in Latin).
I am really passionate about Women in Engineering, and was involved with the Women in Engineering Network at university. Since graduating, I have regularly given presentations at University of Auckland, and speaking at schools to hopefully inspire the next generation of engineers!
I really value the flexibility we have here at AECOM. People can choose to start early or later, depending on what suits them best. I have recently returned from maternity leave, and the company was really supportive of my desire to work three days a week, which has helped me achieve a good balance between work and family life.
I worked in the design team for a major substation, which was commissioned in 2013. I was involved from initial concept design, through to detailed design and during construction. It was so interesting to be involved in a large, multidisciplinary team, and to see how the different disciplines interfaced. I am so proud of my involvement in this project that I have pointed it out to my friends and family when driving past it on the motorway. It’s such a beautiful substation!
Currently, I am working on projects for some of the largest energy producers locally as well as power utilities in Australia, Singapore and the Philippines.
