AECOM’s Hunt Construction Group and PENTA Building Group deliver MGM Resorts International and AEG’s T-Mobile Arena on fast track schedule

Construction for state-of-the-art, US$375-million, 20,000-seat arena completed on time with an aggressive delivery timeline

Las Vegas, NV (April 18, 2016) — AECOM’s Hunt Construction Group, part of the firm’s construction services practice, along with partner PENTA Building Group recently celebrated the completion of the MGM Resorts International and AEG’s T-Mobile Arena project, for which they served as the contractor. The US$375-million arena, which will host world-class events such as UFC and boxing matches, hockey and basketball games, high-profile awards shows and top-name concerts, celebrated its grand opening on April 6th.

The joint venture achieved the aggressive 19-month delivery timeline by creatively re-evaluating the scheduled workflow by allowing subcontractors earlier access to move forward with their tasks. An example of this approach was utilizing a single crane for both steel erection during the day and setting precast elements on second shift.

The arena, originally scheduled for a 22-month construction timeline, was built using more than 7,300 tons of steel, 15,000 square feet of exterior glass and 11 miles of piping. The seating capacity ranges from approximately 17,500 for sporting events to up to 20,000 for entertainment events, providing an unforgettable entertainment experience for thousands of residents and visitors alike — at more than 100 events expected annually.

“Our joint venture is honored to have worked in partnership with project managers ICON Venue Group and architects Populous to help deliver a unique facility for MGM Resorts and AEG in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip,” said Monte Thurmond, senior vice president with Hunt Construction Group. “We commend the skilled workers and companies of Las Vegas, Southern Nevada and those around the country for such diligence and dedication to help deliver this beautiful, iconic venue in less than 20 months.”

“The MGM Resorts and AEG ownership group are an incredibly knowledgeable and sophisticated client, and we congratulate them on achieving their vision,” said Robert Hart, executive vice president with Hunt Construction Group. “May the community of Las Vegas and the national and international visitors enjoy this new beautiful gathering place for decades to come.”

The state-of-the-art facility is located in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. It is highly unique in its six-level plan, drawing on virtual design and construction techniques, unusual geometry and a cylindrical shape in addition to a vertically-sloped exterior skin system. Features include three stages, extensive exterior balconies, a two-acre plaza and an approximately 200-foot by 45-foot mesh wall designed to both mirror the famous Las Vegas strip and serve as a giant LED screen. For VIP visitors, the arena boasts eight “event-level” suites, each outfitted with two flat-screen monitors, a bar, two-way mirrors and couch seating for 16, as well as 44 luxury suites surrounding the lower seating level.
