Georgiou AECOM Consortium to deliver Townsville Ring Road Stage 5

TOWNSVILLE (Sept. 28, 2020) — AECOM, the world’s premier infrastructure consulting firm, as part of the Georgiou AECOM consortium has been awarded the contract to design and build a six-kilometre stretch of road that will duplicate the last remaining two-lane section of the Townsville Ring Road.

Stage 5 of the Townsville Ring Road will improve access and connections to key services in the local community and facilitate safer movement of freight and tourist traffic along Queensland’s major north-south corridor. Due to commence in mid-2021, the project will also support an estimated average of 398 direct jobs over the life of the project. The $230 million project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments on an 80:20 basis.

“This is the final missing piece for the 22km Townsville Ring Road, which will reduce congestion and help move people and freight more safely,” said Shayne Hanran, AECOM’s regional managing director for North and Western Australia. “We are delighted to be working alongside our partner Georgiou to help Transport and Main Roads deliver this critical project.”

The project will be run from AECOM’s Townsville office and is supported by technical specialists from across Queensland as required.

“It is a real privilege to be working on a project that is close to everyone’s hearts here in Townsville,” said Troy Craperi, Townsville office manager. “I know that our team is very proud to be playing their part in improving journey times and safety for the local community. As an engineer, there is nothing quite like pointing to a road, roundabout or bridge you use regularly and saying that you had a hand in creating it.”
