Mark Whitney is appointed chief operating officer of AECOM’s nuclear & environment strategic business unit

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 29 2016) — AECOM, a premier, fully-integrated global infrastructure firm, announced today that Mark Whitney, experienced veteran of the nuclear energy and environmental industries, has been appointed chief operating officer of AECOM’s nuclear & environment strategic business unit.

Following an 11-year career with the Department of Energy, Mr. Whitney joins AECOM having most recently served as the principle deputy assistant secretary for the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management. He was a member of the U.S. Senior Executive Service for more than 11 years, having served in both the Environmental Management office and the National Nuclear Security Administration.

“Mark has a tremendous reputation and is well respected in the industry,” said AECOM President of Management Services John Vollmer. “His leadership while with the U.S. Department of Energy led to many successes for both Environmental Management and the National Nuclear Security Administration. We are excited Mark is joining AECOM.”

Mr. Whitney has previously held several key positions, including acting Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management, the Manager of Environmental Management’s Oak Ridge Office, Assistant Deputy Administrator for Nonproliferation and International Security, and acting Principal Assistant Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation where he oversaw the operations of the Department’s global nuclear security and nonproliferation programs.

“Mark Whitney’s experience and knowledge of the needs and requirements for this important market make him a perfect fit for AECOM,” said Dr. Todd Wright, executive vice president and general manager of the nuclear & environment strategic business unit. “Mark is an outstanding addition to our management services group.”

From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Whitney managed the Department of Energy’s Russian operations, where he led the Department’s in-country activities on nuclear security, nonproliferation, and energy security, including power plant construction projects that provided replacement heat and electricity capacity to enable the shutdown of the final Russian plutonium production reactors. Mark is a graduate of DOE’s Nuclear Executive Leadership Training and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and an MBA in Finance & Investments.
