To thrive, our buildings and places must stand the test of time to be relevant for future users and communities. Endurance is at the heart of sustainability – and one of the greatest challenges for our assets is their future within a net zero society.
Sustainability expectations are evolving at rapid speed and many of our assets are at risk of being left behind and becoming ‘stranded assets’ – which are not fit-for-purpose in a changing world with different user expectations, new energy sources, and evolving digital capabilities. An asset that achieves highly sustainable outcomes today may underperform against sustainability principles of the future.
It’s time for a re-think, and the clock is running down fast to achieve net zero emissions.
We need to build flexible, carbon-positive buildings and infrastructure while simultaneously upgrading and adapting our existing assets to drive down our carbon footprint and serve our changing environmental and societal needs.
