Located 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) south of Bandung in West Java, Indonesia, Wayang Windu Power Generation develops geothermal resources to produce up to 400 megawatt (MW) of electricity within a 120,000 square meters (12,960 hectare) contract area, generating capacity over a period of 42 years.
The first Unit (110-megawatt) at Wayang Windu was completed in 1999, and has been producing at full capacity (with an availability rate of over 98 percent) since 2000. At the time of its installation, Unit I was the largest geothermal turbine in the world.
AECOM provided engineering services for the first unit and was also responsible for the design, preparation of bid documents and construction supervision for the addition of a second turbine-generator unit. The second 117-megawatt unit more than doubles the plant’s output, adding to the existing 110-megawatt turbine. At a total cost of around U.S. $200 million, Wayang Windu is now the largest geothermal power plant in Indonesia. Wayang Windu geothermal field is Indonesia’s largest geothermal development and one of the largest in the world.
In addition to the 117MW geothermal turbine generator unit, Unit II has auxiliary plant including condenser, cooling tower, non-condensable gas extraction facilities and H2S removal system. A steam above-ground pipeline system (SAGS) connects the new geothermal wells to the turbine. The plant-wide distributed control system has also been extended and integrated.

The project was delivered to the client two weeks ahead of schedule and within budget. It was also without lost time accidents onsite, setting up a new labor benchmark for Indonesia. The plant generates 120 megawatt (about three megawatt more than specified) and is currently the world’s largest single shaft geothermal steam turbine in operation.
AECOM is assisting with another two units being planned to come on stream by 2010, bringing Wayang Windu’s total plant capacity to 500MW at an additional cost of around U.S. $450 million.
